At Hannacroix Creek Preserve, the New Baltimore Conservancy is proud to showcase an innovative step forward in sustainable infrastructure: the installation of our first bridge constructed from recycled plastic materials.
This bridge represents a forward-thinking approach to conservation and stewardship. Unlike traditional wood structures that can rot, warp, or require frequent replacement in wet environments, recycled plastic lumber is highly durable, weather resistant, and environmentally sustainable. The material is made from reclaimed plastics that would otherwise end up in landfills, giving new life to waste while reducing the need for harvested timber.
Located along the trails near Hannacroix Creek, the bridge allows visitors to safely cross sensitive wet areas while protecting the surrounding habitat from erosion and trampling. Its long lifespan also reduces maintenance costs and ensures that the Conservancy can focus more resources on land stewardship, habitat restoration, and community programs.
This project reflects NBC’s commitment to combining conservation with innovative solutions that protect natural landscapes while improving visitor access. As the Conservancy continues to steward lands across New Baltimore, projects like this recycled plastic bridge demonstrate how thoughtful design can support both environmental sustainability and community enjoyment of the outdoors. 🌿🌉
